Top tip: book restaurants and accommodation well in advance, the highlands is a remote region with fairly limited capacity and it can get busy.

Day 1
Route: Inverness > Dornoch (via Lairg)

  • Arrive by overnight train on the Caledonian Express from London > Inverness

  • Rent a car from Keddy/Europcar and set off

  • Stop at Fall of Shin Waterfall where you can see Salmon jumping in the summer

  • Lunch at The Pier, Lairg; a relaxed loch side diner serving fresh seafood

  • Check-in to Dornoch Castle Hotel

  • An evening stroll along Dornoch Beach

  • Dinner at Links House, Courtroom Restaurant; serves locally-sourced dishes and crafty ales


Day 2:
Route: Dornoch > John o’ Groats

Route: John o’ Groats > Tongue

Day 4:
Route: Tongue > Lochinver
This is a big day so worth setting off nice and early.
